On average how many times a year do you blink?
You blink about 6.5 million times a year. There's more to blinking than what meets the eye.
- It varies but most adults blink once every 5 seconds. Infants on the other hand blink less than twice a minute.
- When we concentrate or are taking in important information we blink less.
- There are 20-30 sebaceous glands around our eyelids. They produce oil. When you blink you automatically coat your eye with this oil to help lubricate it and prevent it from drying out.
- You also keep your eyes from drying out by coating them with tear fluid from the tear ducts each time you blink.
- The oil and tear fluid help flush dust, dirt and other things from your eye.
- Blinking is also a way of shielding your eyes so things don’t get in them. This is why you naturally blink when you’re startled or when something moves quickly toward your face.
