Who is the world’s largest exporter of electricity?
Paraguay. Since, the Itaipu dam, the largest hydroelectric power complex in the world lies between Paraguay and Brazil on the Paraná River.
Its 12,600-megawatt capacity powers Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo in Brazil along with 93% of Paraguay's power.
Since, the dam is on the border between Paraguay and Brazil they have a joint agreement. Paraguay gets 50% and Brazil gets 50% of the electricity from the dam. However, Paraguay has a population of 6 million people and Brazil has a population of 200 million. As a result, Paraguay only keeps 5% of Itaipu’s power and sells the rest back to Brazil. Making Paraguay the largest exporter of hydroelectric power.
