How long can a cold or flu virus live on a door knob?

contaminated_door_knob_300x204It depends on the specific virus and the type of surface but there is evidence that some can be active for up to three days on a nonporous surface — such as plastic, metal and wood. Washing your hands with soap and water or with a alcohol-based sanitizer several times a day is a good practice, especially during cold and flu seasons.
