How much of Earth’s water is freshwater?
Most of the water on the planet is found in the oceans in the form of saltwater. Less than 3 percent is freshwater. Roughly two thirds of the freshwater is locked up in glaciers and ice caps. So we can only use about 1% of Earth's water for drinking and growing food.
The statistics about water are just as fluid and changing as water itself. Melting glaciers, deforestation, pumping non-renewable ground water, and pollution are all reducing the amount of usable freshwater available on earth. This is all happening at a time when our population is growing at around 75 million more people per year.
