It depends on the specific virus and the type of surface but there is evidence that some can be active for up to three days on a nonporous surface — such as plastic, metal and wood.  Generally, cold and flu virus are spread from person to person contact but they can be picked up from contaminated objects.

If you’ve come in contact with a shared object like handles, knobs and faucets you should avoid touching anywhere on your face until you wash your hands.  Washing your hands with soap and water or with a alcohol-based sanitizer several times a day is a good practice, especially during cold and flu seasons.
